About Us

Elliott & Elliott is a newly established law firm eager and ready to serve Barrie and the surrounding communities. Shari’s combined real estate and environmental expertise distinguishes her from general real estate practitioners. She has an expertise that comes from over 10 years experience including 5 years as a member of the environmental group at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt with a secondment to Imperial Oil.

Lawyers and staff at Elliott & Elliott place a high value on keeping our clients informed. We are available to meet at your convenience whether by phone, email or meetings outside regular business hours or at the location of the client.

Our clientele include residential and commercial real estate in Simcoe County as well as municipal and environmental matters throughout Ontario, including assistance to individual councilors.

We also place a high level of importance on serving our community. Shari has been a board member at Royal Victoria Hospital since 2009 and is currently the Chair of the Performance and Quality Committee. Elliott & Elliott is also pleased to be sponsoring and providing legal services (at no charge) to a local sports association.

Ian Elliott was raised in Bruce County and attended Ripley District Public and High School. Ian obtained his law degree at Osgoode Hall Law School, graduating in 2003. Ian articled at Hydro One. Ian is looking forward to assisting the firms' clients with their real estate needs.

Shari ElliottShari Elliott was raised in Bruce County and attended Ripley District Public and High School. Shari obtained her law degree at Dalhousie Law School, graduating in 1999. Prior to starting Elliott & Elliott this past year Shari was a partner with a local Barrie Law Firm. Shari joined Graham Partners LLP (formerly Graham, Wilson & Green) in 2005. Prior to relocating to Simcoe County with her family Shari was employed with Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP in Toronto. Her employment with Osler began as a summer student in 1998. She was on secondment to Imperial Oil following the completion of her articles until January of 2001 when she joined the firm's Environmental Law Group and General Litigation Department. Shari practiced in the areas of commercial litigation, environmental and energy law.

Shari joined a local Barrie Law Firm in 2005, and was admitted into the partnership in 2008. Shari's legal practice focuses on Environmental, Municipal, Planning and Real Estate Law. In November 2010 Shari opened her own practice alongside her husband in Barrie. Shari will continue to provide the same excellent service to her clients from her new location in downtown Barrie.

Professional Experience

  • Shari's municipal and planning practice has included providing advice to all departments within municipalities as well as the members of council on a wide range of topics.
  • Some recent projects included the development of a landfill inventory jointly on behalf of Simcoe County and the Ministry of Environment. This project included searching the title, attending on site visits, reviewing all known information and seeking assistance from member municipalities to obtain information to create a comprehensive database which accurately reflects to location and status of each landfill site. Shari prepared Official Plan waste policies. In cooperation with the MOE and the MMAH policies for approving development within the assessment areas of landfill sites were prepared to ease the pressure from development in this fast growing municipality.
  • Shari has performed all tasks required to implement a Master Transportation Plan from the drafting of the upload and download agreements, title searches and title corrections and negotiations of individual terms on behalf of an upper-tier with multiple lower-tiers.
  • For the Clerk's Department she has extensive experience with assisting municipal staff in responding to requests for information including appeals and communications with the Privacy Commission.
  • She assisted with implementation of the municipal policy requiring aggregate operators to contribute to the improvements and maintenance for the associated haul routes including representation at the Ontario Municipal Board.
  • Shari also has extensive experience drafting bylaws, resolutions and policies for a variety of municipal departments, committees and boards.
  • Shari was responsibility for assisting a growing municipality in Simcoe County with all aspects of development agreements and related real estate transactions.
  • Shari has been involved in the changes to the Federal and Provincial Environmental Legislation related to contamination properties since 1999. In February 2000, Shari was part of the team retained by the National Round Table on Economic Development and the Environment (NRTEE) to assist in the preparation of a report to encourage brownfield redevelopment titled "Facilitating a Brownfield Redevelopment Strategy for Canada." The NRTEE reports to the Prime Minister of Canada.
  • In February 2002, she was invited to participate in the Hamilton Brownfield Summit.
  • Throughout 2001 and 2002 she volunteered her time as an advisor to the NRTEE and provided extensive assistance with the drafting of a National Strategy for Brownfield Redevelopment. Shari has written extensively on the issues surrounding Brownfield properties.
  • Shari's transactional practice has focused on environmental aspects of mergers and acquisitions, commercial real estate transactions and brownfield site remediation.
  • She also advises clients on matters pertaining to environmental audits and site assessments, regulatory inspections and investigations, environmental management systems and environmental civil liability.
  • Shari has worked with a diverse range of clientele that has included leaders from the following sectors: municipal, property management, waste management, remediation technologies, energy production, energy transmission, petroleum and petrochemical, electronics manufacturer and supply, investment and finance, automotive manufacturer, telecommunications, waste management and publishing.

Kristy Buckle relocated to Barrie in 2009 to pursue her career in the legal field. Kristy graduated from Georgian College in 2012 with an Honours diploma in Legal Office Administration. With two years of experience in real estate, she looks forward to assisting clients with the completion of any and all real estate needs.

Hayley Valleau graduated with Honours from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2012, obtaining her Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies. Hayley is pursuing a future career as a lawyer and will be attending law school in 2013.

Victoria Sipidias volunteering while completing her studies to obtain a paralegal licence. Victoria received her Bachelor of Arts degree from York University in 2012. Victoria is also an active board member on the MS Society of Canada Simcoe County Chapter Board of Directors.
